The Challenge

The Thompsons came to us with a classic Nelson challenge - a steep hillside property with limited usable outdoor space. They wanted areas for entertaining, gardening, and for their children to play, but the slope made conventional landscaping impossible.

The Process

Phase 1: Site Preparation and Excavation

We began by clearing the site of unsuitable vegetation while preserving mature trees that added character to the property. Our experienced operators then carefully excavated the hillside to create three distinct level areas connected by gently sloping pathways.

Phase 2: Retaining Wall Construction

Using a combination of engineered concrete block and timber retaining walls, we secured the newly created terraces. Each wall was built with proper drainage systems behind to relieve hydrostatic pressure and ensure long-term stability.

Phase 3: Drainage Implementation

A comprehensive drainage solution was installed, including:

• French drains behind retaining walls
• Surface water collection points
• Subsoil drainage in lawn areas
• Stormwater management system connected to council infrastructure

Phase 4: Landscaping and Finishing

The final phase brought the project to life with:

• Premium topsoil for lawn and garden areas
• Roll-out lawn for immediate green space
• Native plant selections suited to the different microclimates
